In operation since the 1940s, and a Gateway affiliate since 2009, Capital City Community Centers (Cap City) offers a variety of services designed to help families meet basic needs. With programs serving the Smith Hill, Mount Pleasant, Elmhurst, Wanskuck, and Valley sections of Providence, Capital City is a social services fixture for families who live and work in these neighborhoods.
Cap City supports individuals who have difficulty across life domains, from the basic needs of food and social services to child and elder care. Our mission is to provide individuals and families with the tools they need to live independent, healthy, and productive lives. The vision: the community will have the resources and supports needed to improve the lives of its members.
Early Childhood Services
Cap City’s Smith Hill Early Childhood Learning Center (SHECLC) is located at 25 Danforth Street in the heart of Providence’s Smith Hill neighborhood. The Center is licensed by DCYF, with four of its six classrooms certified by RIDE. During the FY16 year, we served 125 children from diverse backgrounds
Lillian Feinstein Senior Center
Capital City Community Center is dedicated to increasing the health and wellness of our senior citizens. Our Lillian Feinstein Senior Center, located at 1085 Chalkstone Avenue in Providence, serves approximately 70 seniors from the Smith Hill, Valley, Mount Pleasant, Wanskuck, and Elmhurst neighborhoods. The Center is open to the public from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. All activities and services are designed to promote optimal health and wellness and opportunities for socialization with peers, and are available to those from all income levels.
Food Pantry & Basic Needs Assistance
Cap City's Food Pantry is located at the Chad Brown Community Center, 263 Chad Brown Street in Providence. Our goal is to increase nutritious food options for low income individuals and families and to ensure that no child, adult or family goes hungry. The Food Pantry is open Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to low income people of Smith Hill and surrounding neighborhoods (primarily the 02908 zip code). Through our partnership with the RI Food Bank, we distribute canned and bulk food products, and when available, frozen meats, fish and poultry, along with weekly fresh produce.
